The Times They Are A Changin
The Times They Are A Changinâ⦠The Times They Are A Changinâ⦠12 Jul 2017 Matthew Duncan The Times They Are A Changinâ⦠So sang world weary troubadour Bob Dylan. Was he singing about jobs in Aberdeen and the employment market? Given that he wrote the song in New Yorkâs Greenwich Village in 1964, probably not. But he may as well have been. For the times they are indeed very different. As someone who started working in recruitment in 2011, Iâve seen my fair share of ups and downs, definitely more downs than ups in the last couple of years. Accepted wisdom has been that we are in a âclient drivenâ market and that firms have the pick of the many candidates available on the market. Change In Balance However, over the last couple of months, my colleagues and I have noticed a change. Slowly, but surely, the very best candidates have been receiving multiple offers, and some hiring managers have missed out. Is this âevidenceâ purely anecdotal on my part? Yes (although I can assure you itâs true!) Is the sample size statistically insignificant? Yes. Is this something that you would expect a recruitment agency to say anyway? Yes! But none of these factors donât mean that it isnât happening. True, a lot of these vacancies are for contract positions due to the uncertainty that we are still facing in the long term here in Aberdeen but thatâs going to be of little consolation to the hiring manager who has missed out on their prize candidate. Start Now Weâre still a long way off from the heady heights we hit a few years ago. But my advice to you would be to move sooner rather than later when you find a potential employee you like to avoid being gazumped. And if you think this is just recruiter talk⦠donât blame me when you miss out on your preferred candidate and your recruitment process is back at square one!
